The Woof's Meow Art Studio

In the early 2000s, I knew of someone named Patti who worked in the Personnel Department of the City of Alexandria. In 2004, she quit working there, or as we, fellow employees used to say, she escaped. Even though I didn't know her that well, I was still happy for her and envious because anyone who could escape City Hall deserved applause.   In 2006, my sweet german shepherd, Prowler, was born and not long after I was searching for a pet sitter since I was gone most of the day commuting from Woodbridge to Alexandria.  After a lot of research and trying a few sitters, I finally contacted this one person and made an appointment for her to come by to meet us.

To my surprise, it was Patti! She was quickly hired and it didn't take long for Prowler to call her "Aunt Patti". (Yes, my dog can talk. Can't yours?)

As time went on, I depended on Patti so very much and trusted her with my baby as well as my home. I could always count on her and was so thankful to have found her.

I'm happy to say that while I don't need a daily pet sitter any longer because Prowler is older, can be left alone and I only work a mile from home now, Patti and I still keep in touch.  Our love of animals, especially dogs, and family will always keep us connected.

While I know what an incredible connection Patti has with dogs and her obvious and undying devotion and love for all animals, what I didn't know was the hidden talent that she has as an artist!

A few months ago, I came across incredible paintings she was creating of our beloved
four-legged furry family members! In December 2014, I was fortunate enough to have her create a portrait of  "my slippers". My favorite guy, as I like to refer to him, has two pure bred, white maltese dogs who are the most adorable little snugglebugs I have ever seen. While he adores his babies as much as I adore my Prowler, and I needed the "perfect Christmas gift" for him, it was fate that I had come upon Patti's website!

From just a few photos that I had provided to Patti and some personal specifics, the finished product was absolutely mesmerizing for me and for their owner!  I couldn't have been more pleased and am still in awe of Patti's talent!

I am pleased to announce that Patti has offered up her artistic services for my fundraiser's silent auction!

Up for auction will be a gift certificate (valued at $115) for a 12x16 hand-painted canvas board (or stretched canvas) portrait! All she needs from you is a photo or two and any other specifics that you would like included in the final product so that she can bring your best friend to life with acrylic paint!!

Please visit Patti's website at
to find out more details and view the incredible pieces of art she has completed!

Please note: Patti has also offered to generously give 15% to ZERO for all future orders who mention my name or my dad's when ordering.

I am so grateful for her friendship and for her offer of this incredible item for the silent auction to benefit
Denny's Shotgun Riders!

Thank you to Chateau O'Brien at Northpoint Winery!

It's only appropriate that the first spotlight post be on the first business to commit a donation to my silent auction:

Chateau O'Brien at Northpoint Winery

Within an hour or so of posting the link on Facebook to my personal page for the walk, I received a generous donation from Howard O'Brien, the owner of Chateau O'Brien and a man I am honored to call "friend".

Howard made an online donation and, when I graciously thanked him, he said he wished he could do more. Well, ask and ye shall receive, my friend!

At that point in time, I hadn't nailed down the details for the fundraiser but I had ideas in my mind, so I informed him there would be a potential fundraiser if he wanted to help out.
Without a second thought, he said he would be more than happy to donate an:

  exclusive private cellar wine tasting
for four people!!!

If you are the lucky winner of this silent auction item, Howard will guide you and three of your friends through an exclusive wine tasting in his family's private wine cellar where you will spend an hour exploring more about the winery's viticulture and winemaking processes, while sampling a superior flight of not-yet-released wines and a selection of artisan meats and cheeses!
These wines are only available for purchase by private cellar guests!

There is so much I could say about this winery and Howard.
I have visited the winery many times and enjoyed each and every visit as if each time were the first. While I would love for you to bid on this auction item, I highly recommend visiting Chateau O'Brien regardless!

Last Fall, after much prodding by people we had met at the winery, my friend, Maurine, and I decided to make an appointment for the private cellar tasting.
Now, I am the one who is encouraging every wine drinker I know to make an appointment for this unique tasting!

I love wine. I love learning about and tasting new wines. I love visiting new wineries.
I love the landscape. I love meeting new people (most of the time). I love being out in nature.
The photographer in me is also always up for a wine adventure.

Chateau O'Brien is one of my absolute favorite wineries in Virginia. Without a doubt, I feel as if Howard has the best reds on the east coast (Sorry, my heart lies in Napa).  I admit, when I first visited, I was taken aback by the prices but after trying the wines, I knew that they were worth every penny! This place is absolutely exquisite in every possible way.

If you are fan of wine and you live within an hour (or even two) of Fauquier County, an afternoon at Chateau O'Brien should be a must on your winery bucket list.

If you want an experience you won't forget, then I highly suggest you find three of your closest friends and bid on this silent auction item! If you can't find three people to go with you (well, then they are crazy but that's a different story), then I promise you, Maurine and I will be more than happy to tag along. You won't need to twist our arms!

A big heartfelt thanks to Howard for being the first to donate an item for my silent auction and showing his tremendous support for me, my family and Denny's Shotgun Riders!

Get ready to bid!

I am excited about the response I've received already as far as businesses and individuals donating items for the silent auction and raffle portions of the fundraiser! I've decided to showcase a few of them on this blog so that you'll be able to know what is coming! The response has been overwhelming for me in such a fantastic way. There's still quite a bit of time left so I know there will be even more that are coming!

Some items will be part of a raffle where individuals buy tickets and then tickets are pulled at random. If your name is called you get the item that is up for raffle. Depending on how many I receive, we'll have a few of these throughout the evening.

Other items will be part of the silent auction. If you haven't been part of a silent auction before, they are super fun! You'll see the item displayed or details about the item if it's a gift certificate.  There will be a sign up sheet next to each item which includes the value of the item, the starting bid and slots for individuals to bid. When you are interested in an item, you write your name down with the amount of money you are willing to pay for it.  If you are the highest bidder when the silent auction closes, you win that item. You will be expected to pay for the item with the amount that you bid before we are able to give you the item. Keep in mind that the only payment form accepted will be cash and checks so have your wallets and pens ready!

I have already received quite a few items and been given commitments on receiving many others. I'm not giving up - full speed ahead. It's all about raising money for Denny's Shotgun Riders and helping to put an end to prostate cancer!

Stay tuned to this blog for spotlight posts on businesses and individuals who will be part of the silent auction and raffle! I cannot thank them enough for their generosity!

Why "Denny's Shotgun Riders"?

We all know what "riding shotgun: means.  We all have been in a position with a group of friends where we've "called shotgun" and beat someone to the passenger seat of the car so we could ride in the front. So riding shotgun pretty much refers to the practice of sitting alongside the driver in a moving vehicle. What you may not know is that the expression comes from  the days of stagecoach travel and was derived from the term "express messenger".  It seems as if "riding shotgun" wasn't coined until 1919 and was often used in print and film depiction of stagecoaches and wagons in the Old West in danger of being robbed or attacked by bandits.  The person riding shotgun would sit next to the driver with a shotgun or rifle to provide an armed response in case they were threatened.  Recently, and most importantly, the phrase "shotgun rider" has been more specifically used to refer to giving actual or figurative support to someone in a situation; watching their back.

 *****

When I was trying to come up with a name for my team, it didn't take long. I knew it had to honor my dad. I knew it had to be unique. I knew it had to have something to do with Tim McGraw. My parents and I love Tim and always see him live when he's in town; we have for many years.  In 2004, his song, "Live like you were dying" hit number one on the charts and that summer, the three of us saw Tim live.  When he sang that song it was emotional right from the opening lines:

"He said: "I was in my early forties,
"With a lot of life before me,
"And a moment came that stopped me on a dime.
"I spent most of the next days,
"Looking at the x-rays,
"Talkin 'bout the options and, talkin’ ‘bout sweet time."
I asked him when it sank in,
That this might really be the real end?
How’s it hit you when you get that kind of news?
Man whatcha do?

An' he said: "I went sky diving, I went rocky mountain climbing,
"I went two point seven seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu.
"And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter,
"And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying."
And he said, "Some day, I hope you get the chance,
"To live like you were dyin'."

So, I thought maybe I need to incorporate that song into my team name somehow. But nothing came to me. It just didn't seem to work. Then it hit me.

Tim's latest hit is called "Shotgun Rider". From the minute my parents heard it, they fell in love with it. It's a perfect love story for them.  They can't imagine not being together.

Roll, won’t you come roll with me slow, fast, full speed
Girl, wherever sweet time takes us
Hang, with me down this old road
Only God knows where we’ll go
Don’t matter long as I’ve got your love

I don’t ever want to wake up,
Lookin’ into someone else’s eyes
Another voice calling me "baby"
On the other end of the phone
A new girl puttin’ on her makeup
Before dinner on Friday night
No I don’t ever wanna know
No other shotgun rider, beside me, singin’ to the radio

Slide, slide over nice and close
Lay your head down on my shoulder
You can fall asleep I’ll let you
Dream, life ain't nothing but a dream, don’t wanna be
Cruisin’ through this dream without you.

It's also a perfect name for my team to honor my dad. From the minute he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996, my mom and I have been by his side. Every time it has recurred, we've been right there by his side. I know more about prostate cancer than I ever imagined. But when someone I love is threatened by something, I delve into protecting them. I research, I go to doctor's appointments, I ask questions, I suggest options. Doctors are human beings. They are no different than the rest of us except they chose a different career path. I respect them but I also will challenge them if I don't agree with a form of treatment. We are responsible for our own bodies and health and it is up to us to be informed and knowledgeable. Ultimately we are in control. Doctors guide us and hopefully, it's in the right direction. Dad was fortunate enough to have an incredible oncologist, Dr. Katcher, who unfortunately retired December 31, 2014. Now that Dad's cancer has returned again, it is very upsetting to not have Dr. Katcher on the case. We have relied on him for so many years and I have learned so much from him.

I can't take my dad's cancer away. I can't take my dad's pain away. I can't take his medicine for him. I can't take his treatment for him. There are things I can do though and I will do them the best way I know how. I can love him. I can support him. I can listen to him. I can arm myself with knowledge and do my best to help him and the doctors.

But all of that doesn't seem like enough. I need to be productive. I need to feel as if I am helping; making a difference. I need to focus on what I can control so that I don't downward spiral into a depth of emotional solitude. That is why I decided to participate in the ZERO walk. But just walking wasn't enough. I needed to do more so I decided to form a team and recruited three people immediately - Gloria, Maurine and Jason. Everyone wants to help and I am so grateful to have such incredible people in my life. I immediately started surrounding myself with those people I love, who love me and who love my dad.

We will support and honor my dad as "Denny's Shotgun Riders". There is no where I'd rather be than by my dad's side, riding shotgun, supporting him and fighting prostate cancer with him. I've got his back now and always. No matter what happens. Each person who joins our team also makes that commitment and shows their support as one of his shotgun riders as he fights prostate cancer yet again. We've always been there but now it's about physically showing it.

Creating a team and recruiting some of my favorite people wasn't good enough though. I want to raise as much money as I possibly can for this cause. I don't think prostate cancer awareness is given enough publicity which is a damn shame. October overwhelmingly turns pink each year and I'm all for it. Unfortunately, many of my friends, male and female, have had and/or are currently fighting breast cancer. But why can't we do the same for prostate cancer and turn September blue?

I decided to have a goal of recruiting 5 team members because Dad's cancer has come back 5 times. I set a fundraising goal of $1,900 because this year marks 19 years that Dad was diagnosed. I believe that I will be able to surpass both of those goals and am almost there. When I raised $250 I found out that Denny's Shotgun Riders will have a lawn sign placed along the walk route the day of the race. I then found out if I raise $2,500 within 6 weeks of the race date, we'll be able to get our team name on the back of our race shirts. That right now is my goal. I only need $1,000 more and I have a little over four months to get there. I'm not stopping there though. The more money I can raise the better.

I'm lucky enough to have such a good friend in Arthur, the owner of my happy place, and he's allowed me to hold a fundraiser for the team in April. I am going full-speed ahead in gathering donated items from businesses to raffle and auction off.  I want to make this event prosperous fundraising wise, but I also want to be able to gather everyone together who cares and wants to help.  With each hug, with each offer of support, with each "You're not alone" or "We're in this together" we receive, my heart is touched and I am so humbled.

Being one of Denny's Shotgun Riders means that we've got his back. It means we love him and we will do everything we can to support him through this battle. I, honestly, can't imagine anywhere I'd rather be.

On Father's Day, Sunday, June 21, I’m taking part in the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk in honor of one of my best friends, my hero, and the strongest and most loving man I know – my dad, Denny Moore. My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996 at the age of 47; a huge shock for him, my mother and myself. Over the last 19 years, his cancer has come back five times and he has kicked its ass each time, always keeping a positive outlook. I will do everything in my power to keep him happy and continue to help him fight this wretched disease.

Being team captain for “Denny’s Shotgun Riders” is a true honor and the absolute least I can do to not only support my dad but help others fight and prevent prostate cancer.

No donation is too big or too small and you can designate your contribution in memory of a loved one, or in honor of a man now battling prostate cancer. I’d also love for you to join my team and walk/run with me on Father’s Day. Becoming one of “Denny’s Shotgun Riders” would be a true honor and mean so much to me and my dad.

If you want to help me keep families together and save lives by doing our best to put an end to prostate cancer, then click on the link below to go to my personal fundraising page.  Help me put an end to the suffering of prostate cancer that strikes nearly 240,000 men each year and kills nearly 30,000 others! No donation is too big or too small. Every penny counts!
